Values
Here, in random order, is a continually evolving list of things that we in this lab believe to be true.
-
All people should be listened to and treated with dignity and respect.
-
All animals should be treated humanely in ways that minimize discomfort and maximize replacement, reduction and refinement (the “3 Rs” of ethical animal research).
-
Our goal as scientists is to rigorously test hypotheses and provide evidence for how the natural world really works, not to generate results that support our hypotheses.
-
Alternative hypotheses should be formed wherever possible.
-
Collaboration improves scientific quality and enriches the research experience.
-
Diversity among those doing science enhances the perspective, creativity and overall progress of research at all levels.
-
Ideal working hours will vary within and among individuals. Lab members are encouraged to work whenever is best for them.
-
Maintaining an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and free of unconscious biases requires regular self-reflection.
-
The results of our work should be shared as broadly and as accessibly as possible with members of both scientific and non-scientific communities.
-
There is usually more than one way to do something well.
